Space Sciences Unit
Topics being covered in this unit:
- Gravity
- Objects in our solar system
- SCALE!! (how big or far things ACTUALLY are in our solar system)
- Patterns in shadows, tides, seasons, and the night sky (i.e. moon logs --> moon phases)
Culminating project: A Scientific Google Slides presentation!
Science project steps/guidelines:
Each one of you will be in a group where you will research and find more DETAILED information to answer the questions below. Keep in mind that each question has many layers of answers and could be 100 pages long, so you'll want to pick out information that you find interesting in order to answer the question.
Your goal: To present answers and interesting insights to the essential question your group has chosen using kind words, teamwork and sharing equal responsibility.
1. Group yourself into a group of 2-3 people. Choose jobs: recorder(s) and researcher(s)
2. Choose an essential question from the list below:
Why is everything able to stay in place (objects and people on earth, planets and moons in our solar system)
What makes stars look brighter and dimmer in the sky?
How are we able to tell what time of the day it is?
How are we able to tell what time of the year it is?
Where does all life on Earth come from and why?
What makes the Earth so special?
Why do we have seasons and days and nights?
Why does the moon have different phases?
3. Do some research. Start by searching Google for your topic to find answers. Remember each question has more than one answer. Be sure to collect the URL (link) at the very least. (If you're group is using a google doc to record information, please share it with me- [email protected])
4. Then use Library time (Wednesday-tomorrow) to find books that may have answers to your topic. You can either check those books out or bring your notebook and pencil to the library to take notes. Be sure to collect the title of the book and author at the very least.
5. Remember to cite your sources, which means that you are recording where you got each piece of information. Pictures included!
6. Once you've been checked by Ms. Lee, you may start making a Google Slides presentation for your essential question and all the relating topics of your interest.
7. To make a Google slide:
Have 1 person create the Slide and Title it with your question. Then have the same person share it with the other members of the group. Please share the Google Slide with me- [email protected]
Once it is shared all members can start working on the project as a group. DO NOT DELETE ANY WORK THAT YOU DID NOT CREATE. Remember to ask each other questions and make compromises! Do not be afraid to communicate even if you do not agree.
A demo lesson of how to use Google Slides will be done in class. Please pay close attention because you will learn something new!
